We have had so much going on in our home over the past couple of weeks. We decided to convert our downstairs (we live in a vintage '78 Split Level) into an apartment of sorts- minus the kitchen. Our daughter has turned 18 and we felt that we could help her along in this growing up thing she is insistent in doing...So we decided that we would give her the entire downstairs with the exception of the Laundry room. She will begin to pay us $100 a month for "rent" in a month and we will gradually increase the amount so she can get an idea of what she will be paying when she moves out and completely on her own. We will hold the money in an account for her so when she is ready, she will have the money to do so. She has invited a girlfriend to join her and together they are planning the decor...My, do they have plans! We have offered her friend the same financial options. We are in hopes that this will teach them a bit about budgets as well as give them a soft place to land when they fall, and they will fall! The hardest part for me is releasing the control...Not knowing when she is coming home, every detail of what she is doing. The hardest part for my beloved is that he has lost his "man cave". He is currently in mourning, but promising that his upcoming hunting trip will cure all. While he is gone we will complete the move of furniture and painting. So to de-stress and to keep my mind off the fact that I have an independent, wise, and mature daughter, I SEW!
I just completed my first pair of pants that I think I might actually wear!
The pattern was very easy (Octtobra Fall issue of 09). I realized after I got them all done that I had made the waistband wrong, however, they will work and I will know better for next time. I will definitely make another pair or two with fabric I love. Not so crazy about the fabric I choose, (they look like a tablecloth) but I didnt want to waist a favorite fabric assuming that I would dislike the fit and final product from this pattern too!
I am looking forward to completing a top out of this to wear with them and then...

The apartment sounds like a great plan, but where is your sewing room now! Did you get to take over the room that was vacated???
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the pants, and you can use the extra fabric on me if you want... :0)
Love you,
Lor
Laurie-YES!!! The vacant room is all mine! Loving it too!I have scrounged up a ton of storage options from around the house and it is working out great. Steve is processing slowly, LOL...Of course I generally embrace change so I am in heaven right now. Life is good!
